Fifth-gen air-superiority stealth fighter from the USAF Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program. Lockheed (Skunk Works-led) + Boeing + General Dynamics; YF-22 beat YF-23 in 1991; service 2005.
ATF began 1981 to counter Soviet Su-27/MiG-29 and S-300. Lockheed's Skunk Works team (Bart Osborne) migrated from an SR-71-like concept to an F-117-influenced stealth design. YF-22 rolled out at Palmdale Aug 1990, won the competition April 1991 (more maneuverable/cheaper than the stealthier YF-23). Production F-22 first flew 1997 at Marietta, GA; entered service Dec 2005. Program cut from 750 to 195 aircraft, ended 2011. Steve Justice worked the YF-22A program.
