Section 1683 of the FY2022 NDAA mandated an expanded UAP office; Section 6802 of the FY2023 NDAA (50 U.S.C. 3373) defined AARO duties and the annual-report and historical-record requirements.
FY2022 NDAA 1683 forced DoD to broaden the AOIMSG mission, leading to AARO on July 15, 2022, and disestablished the UAPTF. FY2023 NDAA 6802 amended the reporting mandate and set the historical-record review (Volumes I/II). These statutes are the legal scaffolding under which AARO and the annual reports operate.
