'Gabe' Valdez (c.1944-2011), long-time NM State Police officer, became 'the cattle mutilation guy' for Rio Arriba County; investigated mutilations on Manuel Gomez's ranch 13 mi east of Dulce (Gomez lost 4 cattle 1976-78). His documentation of tribal-land cases helped trigger FBI involvement. [DOCUMENTED] On 5 July 1978 he, Gomez and retired scientist Howard Burgess ran ~120 cattle under UV light and found a 'glittery substance' on neck/ear/leg of some animals.
