Botanist-turned-psychologist who founded experimental parapsychology at Duke in the 1930s; coined/popularized ESP and parapsychology.
Introduced statistical card-guessing (Zener cards) and the aspiration to a replicable science of psi. Independent replications repeatedly failed, and his 1940 flawless-rebuttal experiments were shown (Hansel) to permit sensory leakage. His decline effect is his own psi hypothesis; skeptics read it as regression to chance.
