The Kaikoura Lights were a series of unidentified lights observed over the Cook Strait/Kaikoura coast of New Zealand on 21 and 31 December 1978, tracked both visually and on Wellington air-traffic-control radar and filmed by an Australian TV news crew aboard an Argosy aircraft. The footage is genuine and well-documented, but the identification is disputed between prosaic causes (Venus, squid-boat lights) and an unknown. It is among the most film-documented radar-visual cases.
