In 1948-1952, astronomer/meteoriticist Dr. Lincoln LaPaz of the University of New Mexico investigated the 'green fireballs' seen over New Mexico's nuclear installations (Los Alamos, Sandia, Kirtland) on behalf of the Atomic Energy Commission and the military. He interviewed 100+ witnesses, plotted trajectories, and concluded the fireballs behaved unlike natural meteors — suggesting they might be secret US devices or Soviet reconnaissance craft. His investigation helped justify the instrumented monitoring effort Project Twinkle.
