The Mapimi Biosphere Reserve, in the Bolson de Mapimi at the Durango/Chihuahua/Coahuila tripoint in Mexico, is a real federal protected area with a working desert research station. It overlaps the popular 'Zona del Silencio' (Zone of Silence) legend that radio and compass signals fail there, supposedly drawing UFOs and meteorites. It matters as the documented ground beneath that legend; reserve staff report normal radio and GPS function, and the 'silence' myth is largely traced to a 1970 US Athena missile crash and a famous meteorite fall in the area.
