The Maury Island incident was a June 1947 claim by Harold Dahl and Fred Crisman that a donut-shaped craft dumped molten slag over Maury Island in Puget Sound, Washington, days before Kenneth Arnold's sighting. It matters as one of the earliest postwar cases and an early entanglement of UFO lore with hoax and tragedy: the two Army Air Force investigators sent to collect samples died when their B-25 crashed on the return flight. It is widely regarded as a hoax, with Dahl reportedly recanting.
