On 20-21 March 1966, multiple witnesses near Dexter and at Hillsdale College, Michigan reported glowing objects over swampy ground. The Air Force sent Project Blue Book consultant Dr. J. Allen Hynek, who suggested the lights might be "swamp gas" (marsh methane ignition). The explanation was widely ridiculed and rejected by witnesses; it became a turning point that pushed Hynek toward serious UFO study and fueled congressional pressure for the Condon investigation.
