In April 1991 a powerful unexplained explosion left a large crater near the town of Sasovo in Russia's Ryazan region, with a second event reported, breaking windows but causing little structural damage. Proposed causes range from accidentally detonated stored fertilizer (ammonium nitrate) to geophysical or 'energy-release' effects, with no firm consensus. The event is real but its cause remains disputed.
