Longer/heavier two-seat development of the A-12 with side-looking sensors that removed the need to overfly hostile airspace. Revealed publicly July 1964, entered USAF service January 1966. Operated at speeds/altitudes that let it outrun threats; nicknamed 'Habu.' Retired 1989 (politics), briefly reactivated, retired again 1998; NASA flew it as a research platform to 1999. Still iconic 60 years on.
