Wiltshire UFO flap that began Christmas 1964 as unexplained aerial sounds and grew into the UK's first major UFO hotspot, popularized by Warminster Journal reporter Arthur Shuttlewood; nightly skywatches at Cradle Hill drew thousands.
Started with a 'crackling' overhead noise reported in early 1965, shifting to lights-in-the-sky by mid-1965. Shuttlewood—initially skeptical, later a believer claiming his own cigar-shaped craft sighting and a paralyzing light beam—became the primary and often sole source for early reports, and was accused of embellishing incidents. The defining 1965 photo by Gordon Faulkner, printed by the Daily Mirror, was later acknowledged a hoax. Activity tapered off by 1977.
