In 2016 Allagash witness Chuck Rak recanted the abduction claim, saying hypnosis produced no such recall and he had wanted money, while affirming the group saw an unexplained light.
Speaking by phone in 2016 (~40 years after the trip), Chuck Rak said the abduction did not happen and that he initially supported the story to make money. He maintains the men did see an unidentified light on Eagle and Chamberlain Lakes but calls the lost-time and onboard-examination claims manufactured. He stops short of calling the others liars; the other three still defend the account and no longer speak to him. This is the documented competing account against the abduction claim.
