MoD air-staff secretariat that was the publicly acknowledged UK government branch handling UFO reports from the late 1960s; predecessor (renamed AS2/Sec(AS)2) of the later UFO desk.
DS8 fielded public UFO reports and reports from service personnel, but treated UFOs as the lowest-priority task — a single staffer spent a small fraction of time scanning reports purely for 'defence significance.' It was headed by Ralph Noyes 1969–72, later renamed AS2/Secretariat (Air Staff) 2 (the role Nick Pope occupied in the early 1990s), and is the institutional lineage that culminated in the UFO desk closed in 2009.
