Project Sign's fall-1948 TOP SECRET estimate concluding UFOs were most probably interplanetary; reportedly rejected by Gen. Hoyt Vandenberg (USAF Chief of Staff) who ordered copies destroyed, after which Sign became the debunking-oriented Project Grudge (1949). Known essentially only via Edward Ruppelt (1956); no verified copy survives.
The foundational early-suppression episode. Prompted largely by the July-1948 Chiles-Whitted sighting; concluded the objects were real, beyond known tech, and interplanetary. DISPUTED because the entire account rests on Ruppelt's testimony (first Blue Book head) and NO copy survives ('Holy Grail of ufology'; FOIA fruitless). Honest counterpoint: the 1995 GAO found early Sign records were routinely destroyed under standard retention policy (not necessarily targeted), and a competing Soviet-secret-weapon theory drove Vandenberg's skepticism. Randle/Swords claims that physical-evidence paragraphs were excised + Ruppelt's book censored are ALLEGED.
