Kosmos 96 re-entry (Kecksburg prosaic explanation).

documentedcrash_retrievalCrash-Retrieval Cases

Theory that Kecksburg's object was debris from failed Soviet Venus probe Kosmos 96; contradicted by NASA/USAF trajectory and timing data.

Kosmos 96 was a Soviet Venera-type Venus probe stranded in Earth orbit by a third-stage failure; it re-entered on 9 December 1965. James Oberg (1991) and a 2005 NASA statement proposed it as the Kecksburg source. However NASA's NSSDCA notes the fireball trajectory was too steep for an orbital re-entry, and U.S. Space Command placed Kosmos 96's decay hours earlier over Canada (~13-hour mismatch). NASA's chief orbital-debris scientist Nicholas Johnson told Kean it was 'impossible.' It remains the leading but disputed prosaic candidate.
