The 1942-47 Manhattan Engineer District developed the atomic bomb and built the secrecy apparatus DOE still uses. Its intelligence effort (Alsos mission targeting the German bomb program; MED counterintelligence) is the documented origin of DOE's Office of Intelligence & Counterintelligence, which describes its 'roots in the Manhattan Project's intelligence effort.' The Project established the facilities (Oak Ridge, Los Alamos, Hanford) that passed through AEC/ERDA to DOE/NNSA.
