Oak Ridge Security Panic (1950).

documentednuclear_strategicAtomic Energy Commission / ERDA (DOE progenitors)

Inter-agency security alarm over repeated UFO incursions of the atomic complex's restricted airspace during the early Korean War.

The sustained Oct-Dec 1950 incursions of one of America's most sensitive atomic sites, amid early Korean War tension, produced genuine alarm: multi-day security meetings, a request for AF Intelligence investigation, FBI loyalty vetting of witnesses, and a proposed (later lapsed) instrumentation program with radiation counters and airborne magnetometers. The May 2026 Pentagon release describes the matter as a 'source of great concern to the military establishment.' The contemporary fear centered on Soviet nuclear-powered missiles.
