The Phoenix Lights of 13 March 1997 were a mass sighting over Arizona involving two elements: a slow-moving V-shaped formation of lights seen by thousands, and a later set of lights identified as military flares dropped during an exercise at the Barry Goldwater Range. The flare portion is well explained, while the earlier formation remains debated. It is one of the most famous American mass sightings.
