Susan Clancy earned a Harvard PhD in experimental psychology (2001) studying memory distortion. After backlash to her recovered-memory work on abuse survivors, she turned to abductees as a population whose 'trauma' memories were certainly false. Abducted (Harvard University Press, 2005) argues sane people build vivid false memories from nightmares, cultural texts, hypnosis and a drive for meaning, scoring high on schizotypy/fantasy-proneness. She concluded abduction belief functions like a new-millennium religion.
