Loftus's misinformation-effect and 'lost in the mall' studies implanted entire false memories; she warned recovered-memory and hypnosis techniques create them. Applied to abduction, McNally showed claimants - whose memories were recovered via guided imagery/hypnosis after sleep paralysis - exhibit PTSD-like physiological reactivity to events that almost certainly never occurred, proving emotional vividness is no index of accuracy.
