Whitley Strieber (b.1945) reported a December 1985 encounter at his upstate New York cabin. Communion (1987), his first nonfiction book, hit #1 on the NYT list and sold 2M+ copies, embedding the Grey image in pop culture. He deliberately called the beings 'the visitors,' leaving open time-travelers or interdimensional origins. Critics noted his horror-fiction background and hypnagogia parallels; Strieber conceded the resemblance to his earlier fiction but maintained the accounts were real.
