F-82 Interceptor Scrambles, Oak Ridge.
documentedmilitary_installationAtomic Energy Commission / ERDA (DOE progenitors)
Repeated F-82 Twin Mustang scrambles against Oak Ridge radar targets in Oct-Nov 1950; ground radar showed interception, crews saw nothing.
On 12 Oct 1950 an F-82 was scrambled at 2330, airborne 2339, vectored onto the CPS-1 targets; ground scopes showed interception but the crew had no visual or airborne-radar contact. Further scrambles followed Oct 16, 20, 24 and Nov 5. Ruppelt later cited an Oak Ridge F-82 that nearly hit the ground three times chasing an inversion-produced ground target (his date ~1951-52), the case ATIC's Capt. James ruled 'Weather.'.
