Cross was Battelle's exotic-metallurgy figure and the institute's liaison to the Air Force on Blue Book matters. Vallee later identified him as the 'Pentacle' codename behind the memo. His authorship of the memo is documented; his alleged ability to shape the Robertson Panel agenda is the disputed interpretive layer.
