Philadelphia Experiment (USS Eldridge teleportation).

The legend claims a 1943 Navy experiment rendered the destroyer escort USS Eldridge invisible and teleported it Philadelphia-to-Norfolk, fusing sailors into the hull. It traces almost entirely to Carl M. Allen ('Carlos Allende'), who annotated Morris Jessup's UFO book and mailed it to the Office of Naval Research (~1955), repeatedly confessing it as a hoax then retracting. The Navy denies any such experiment; the Eldridge's logs place it elsewhere; the cited applied Einstein unified-field physics is non-existent. The real 1943 kernel is genuine classified degaussing (magnetic-signature reduction vs. mines). Popularized by Charles Berlitz & William L. Moore (1979), itself criticized for borrowing from the novel 'Thin Air.'.
