Mountain View nonprofit founded by Jill Tarter and Tom Pierson after NASA SETI defunding; runs SETI research, Project Phoenix, and the Allen Telescope Array.

Founded 1984 to continue SETI research independently of fluctuating federal funding. It ran NASA's High Resolution Microwave Survey and, after Congress cut it in 1993, the privately funded Project Phoenix (~750 nearby stars, 1995–2004). Today it hosts 100+ scientists, operates the Allen Telescope Array, and emphasizes falsifiable, independently confirmable detection — explicitly distinguishing SETI from UFO/UAP claims.
