The Stanford Research Institute laboratory program (Menlo Park) where CIA-funded remote-viewing research formally began in 1972, growing out of the 1970 SCANATE contract. Run by physicists Hal Puthoff and Russell Targ, it tested gifted subjects (Swann, Price, Geller, McMoneagle) with blinded protocols, published in Nature (1974) and Proc. IEEE (1976), and was integrated into the military Grill Flame unit. Contracting later moved to SAIC.
