John E. Mack (1929-2004) chaired Harvard Medical School psychiatry and won the 1977 Pulitzer for A Prince of Our Disorder. His 1994 book Abduction presented 13 cases and read the experience as transformative, splitting from Jacobs's threat narrative despite having written Secret Life's foreword. His reliance on hypnosis drew the first Harvard inquiry of a tenured professor (1994-95). He was also fooled by Donna Bassett's faked abduction. He died in a 2004 traffic accident.
