Majestic 12 is the purported code name of a Truman-era committee of scientists, military, and intelligence officials supposedly formed in 1947 to recover and study crashed alien craft. It exists solely within a set of documents that first surfaced via ufologists in 1984. The FBI, Air Force, National Archives, and GAO have all found no evidence the committee ever existed. The contested question is who forged the papers and whether it was a plain hoax or an intelligence disinformation operation.
